Portola Elementary, in the San Bruno Parks School District, is home to Each Green Corner’s original San Bruno Living Campus garden! Portola has become a model outdoor classroom for the district and is home to over 400+ K-5 student gardeners who use this space weekly to learn, grow and get their hands dirty! EGC’s Food Systems Educator, Luke Schuman-Cawley, is the site lead for Portola and works diligently to keep our garden running and our volunteers and students busy.
Recently Portola recieved a generous amount of free mulch, which we are using as a foundation for the pathway through our orchard! The Portola orchard currently consists of 40 fruit trees planted in 2022, which began to produce fruit this past summer and will provide hundreds of pounds of food annually to San Bruno food banks benefitting local residents in need of fresh produce. Our Food Explorer’s school-day curriculum teaches our student gardeners about why we grow food, what a food bank is and does, and ways in which people find themselves struggling with food insecurity in the Bay Area. This helps to show students the bigger picture of food justice, social equity and community-resilience that drives us to produce more food every year.
Portola’s next Living Campus workday will be April 19th from 9am-12pm at 300 Amador Ave, San Bruno 94066. Use the link below and register to volunteer!
