What is the Herb of the Year?
The International Herb Association chooses an herb each year to highlight. Their choice is based on the herb being outstanding in at least two of the following categories: culinary, decorative, or medicinal. Ginger is the Herb of the Year for 2023!
A Background on Ginger
Ginger is native to Asia, and has been used in cooking and medicine for years. It is a subtropical or tropical plant that can be grown in conditions with full sun to partial shade. Ginger grows underground, with a strong green sprouting of new leaves in springtime.
What to Look for When Buying Ginger
The ginger root should have smooth skin with a slight shine to it. If you see wrinkles or soft spots, that can indicate that it is already going bad. When you press into it, it should be nice and firm.
Ways to use Ginger
Ginger can be used for cooking, as it brings lots of flavor and heat. Here are some creative recipes that incorporate ginger!
Ginger can also be used for health, and it is beneficial to many systems in our bodies. Here are some of the many benefits!
Digestion
Ginger ale has been a common remedy for stomach aches and nausea for over a century. Ginger also helps with digestion issues because it helps move the blood through the body. A cup of fresh ginger tea after meals can help relieve symptoms.
